Sarplaninac is a Macedonian word that translates to "Shara Mountain Dog." It is also called the Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog (Sharplanina) according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. Initially the breed was split into two different types of the Illyrian Shepherd Dog in 1939.
